Sam Smith draws inspiration from their mother’s protective love

Sam Smith wanted to capture their mother’s “fury and protection” while creating the new song Oh Mother.

During a conversation with Sara Cox on BBC Radio 2, the nonbinary singer spoke about having a “very strong, beautiful relationship with my mother” Kate Cassidy and explained that they hoped to bring that bond into the track.

Sam shared: “In this song I was just trying to access my mum's fury and protection that comes to save the day when a child gets hurt or heartbroken.”

The Stay With Me singer also revealed that they have started to feel increasingly “maternal” with age.

Sam, 34, explained: “As I'm getting older I feel like I'm becoming more maternal and more definitely hungry one day to have children myself and things like that.

“So it definitely felt like a maturing theme to step into for me, which was really great.”

Sara responded: “I mean, she's there for you through the tough times and even you say as a kid, but even as a grown up, your mum's always going to be there for you.”

Sam replied: “Oh my gosh, yeah, I mean my dad and my mum, my sisters, my whole family have been a rock for me through everything I've gone through.”

As Sam prepares to release their fifth studio album Hazel Eyes, they have also discussed how their personal style has evolved since they first entered the music industry, both in their voice and fashion choices.

Speaking to Variety, they said: “I feel like I’m a flow person. That’s the only way to explain it. Every day I wake up and I feel like a different me, and there’s different things I want to wear. And I felt as though I was locked into a kind of a look for the first five years of my career, which I found so hard.”

They continued: “We all make a choice every morning when we get up. In what we all wear, we all make a choice. And I’m actually passionate about imploring people — if people don’t want to, it’s fine — that if you do want to, it is OK to start again! “To throw it out and start again, and choose a different character. Because it can be so wild when you do that. And the way people treat you or see you, it’s really fun.”

Kavinsky, French DJ behind ‘Nightcall’, found dead in Paris

Kavinsky, the French DJ and electronic musician widely known for ‘Nightcall’, has died at the age of 50.

The artist, whose real name was Vincent Belorgey, was discovered inside his Paris home by authorities at approximately 10:30pm local time on Tuesday, July 28.

French publication Le Figaro reported that emergency services were contacted by a worried neighbour who had not seen Belorgey around the building for several days.

The outlet said his death is suspected to have been caused by a stroke. In the days before he died, the musician reportedly told people close to him that he had been experiencing intense headaches.

According to France24, Paris police confirmed that “an investigation into the causes of death has been opened in order to determine the origin of the death”. Officials also stated that “no suspicious elements were discovered at the scene by the first responders”.

Kavinsky achieved his greatest recognition with ‘Nightcall’, which became a major part of the soundtrack to the 2011 Ryan Gosling movie Drive.

He later performed the track during the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Following the appearance, it set a new record as the most Shazamed song within a single day.

Messages honouring Kavinsky began circulating soon after his death was announced. Clément Beaune, France’s former Secretary of State for European Affairs and Minister for Transport, wrote on X that the country had lost an “immense artist”.

“From ‘Odd Look’ to ‘Nightcall’, and with so much emotion during the Games, Kavinsky made generations dance. And he will continue to make many more dance,” Beaune wrote.

French broadcaster Canal+ remembered him as an “iconic figure of French Touch”. One admirer said they were “heartbroken” by his death and described the musician as “very kind and had a brilliant vision/story”.

Lovefoxxx of CSS provided the vocals for the original recording of ‘Nightcall’. The song gained further attention when London Grammar released their own version in 2013.

The Weeknd also sampled the track before collaborating with Kavinsky on ‘Odd Luck’, while Avenged Sevenfold used the song to open their concerts in 2024.

Belorgey issued his debut Kavinsky album, ‘OutRun’, in 2013 before stepping away from releasing new material for several years. He eventually returned with ‘Reborn’ in 2022.
