Islamic State claims responsibility for German festival stabbings

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a knife attack at a German music festival that left three dead and five seriously injured.

The stabbings took place at around 9:40pm on Friday night (August 23) at the Festival of Diversity in Solingen in western Germany. Early police reports said they believed the stabbings were carried out by a lone attacker, who then fled the scene, leading to a huge manhunt in the area overnight.

Earlier today it was reported that a 15-year-old had been arrested in connection with the attack. Per Sky News, at an afternoon press conference in nearby Wuppertal today, Düsseldorf police confirmed the arrest, urged people to avoid online speculation about the attack, and asked anybody with evidence to submit it using the official helpline.

In a press conference, police stated that the arrested 15-year-old is not believed to be the prime suspect, who is still unknown.

Public prosecutor Markus Caspers said: “He is at this point only suspected of failing to report a crime.” He added that the suspect was alleged to have spoken with the perpetrator “shortly before the crime”.

They then made a second arrest, following a police operation at a home for refugees in Solingen, The Guardian reported. A police spokesperson said they could not provide any more details on the individual or the connection to the incident.

Now, The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a statement on their Telegram account, they said that the attack was carried out by one of its members “in revenge for Muslims in Palestine and everywhere”, per Reuters.

They did not immediately provide any evidence and it is not yet clear how close any relationship between the attacker and Islamic State was. Accounts and individuals claiming to speak for the Islamic State have falsely claimed responsibility for attacks in the past.

Police said they do not yet know the suspect’s motive and they were unable to rule out a “terrorist” motive, but they did state that they do not believe anyone else was involved in the attack.

Local authorities had been seeking tips overnight from the public to find the perpetrator of the attacks, which appeared to be indiscriminate.

People had been gathering in a market square in Solingen with live bands playing as part of the festival, which was organised to mark the 650th anniversary of the city in North Rhine-Westphalia, situated around 15 miles east of Düsseldorf.

Local authorities have said, in addition to the three deceased, a total of eight further people have been wounded, five of them seriously.

“Both victims and witnesses are currently being questioned,” they said. “The police are currently searching for the perpetrator with a large team.”

People were asked to leave the Fronhof market area in the aftermath of the attacks, with emergency crews attending to those injured and roads being shut down,

The mayor of the city, Tim-Oliver Kurzbach posted online that the city was in “shock, horror and great grief”.

“We all wanted to celebrate our town’s anniversary together and now we have to mourn the dead and injured,” he wrote.

He went on to thank the emergency services for their work at the scene. “It tears my heart apart that there was an attack on our city. I have tears in my eyes when I think of those we have lost. I pray for all those who are still fighting for their lives,” he said.

German chancellor Olaf Scholz also said he was “shocked” by the “terrible event”, and wished a “speedy recovery” to those injured. “The perpetrator must be caught quickly and punished to the full extent of the law,” he added.

The Festival of Diversity had been set to run until Sunday with 25,000 people expected to attend each night, but it has now been cancelled.

Queen announce newly mixed, mastered, expanded reissue of debut album

Queen have announced a newly mixed, mastered, expanded reissue of their 1973 self-titled debut album.

Arriving on October 25, the reimagined version of the band’s breakthrough record comes over half a century after its initial release. It has been remixed and restored by Justin Shirley-Smith, Joshua J Macrae and Kris Fredriksson to fit in with the sound that the members always wanted it to have.

Having formed in 1970 with vocalist Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, bassist John Deacon joined the line-up the following year, and they began work on the debut record.

“The first three years were really faith and fumes. We were penniless but we had a lot of belief in ourselves and a lot of energy,” Taylor said, recalling their time working on the initial release.

“We’d arrive [at the studio] at three in the morning and then go on, for all the hours that we could grab. It was just a grind. I wouldn’t say it was soul-destroying because we were quite confident. We had a sort of innate, gentle arrogance, you know, we thought we were good and quite different.”

As well as delivering a remixed and remastered version of the original tracklist, the reissue also comes with an abundance of new material. These include intimate fly-on-the-wall audio of Queen in the studio, demo tracks, rare live tracks, and previously unheard recordings from the band’s first-ever live performance in August 1970.

Called ‘Queen I’, the boxset comes with six CDs and 1 LP, and contains 63 tracks with 43 brand new mixes.

The song ‘Mad The Swine’ – originally absent from the 1973 release – has also been reinstated to its original place in the running order. It was absent from the original LP following a difference of opinion between the band and one of its producers, however, it is now reinstated as the album’s fourth song. It is slotted between ‘Great King Rat’ and ‘My Fairy King’, just as Queen wanted it to be in 1972.

A 108-page book containing handwritten lyrics and memorabilia also accompanies the release. You can find a photo of the book above, pre-order the boxset here, and find the full tracklist below.

“This is not just a remaster, this is a brand new 2024 rebuild of the entire Queen debut album, which, with the benefit of hindsight, we have re-titled ‘QUEEN I’,” writes Brian May in the CD sleeve insert notes.

“All the performances are exactly as they originally appeared in 1973, but every instrument has been revisited to produce the ‘live’ ambient sounds we would have liked to use originally. The result is “Queen“ as it would have sounded with today’s knowledge and technology – a first. ‘Queen I’ is the debut album we always dreamed of bringing to you.”

News of the remastered version of the debut album comes just a week after May shared a health update with fans, revealing that he recently suffered a stroke which left him without control of one arm.

“I didn’t wanna say anything at the time because I didn’t want anything surrounding it, I really don’t want sympathy. Please don’t do that, because it’ll clutter up my inbox, and I hate that. The good news is I’m OK,” he said on Instagram.

While he seems to be doing much better, he did reveal that he is being made to avoid numerous day-to-day things until he is fully recovered.

Earlier this year, Queen wrapped up a run of tour dates across Japan with Adam Lambert as frontman. They currently do not have any other dates scheduled, meaning that the guitarist will have plenty of time to make a full recovery.
