Liberian-American musician and songwriter, JayDaMasah, delivers an inspirational, new Afrobeat single, “Kontrol,” reminding listeners to seek guidance over control. Crafted during a moment of introspection, the single is a nod to the power of God and the peace of letting go of the things we have no control over.
JayDaMasah is a teenage musician with wisdom beyond his years. While keeping busy with everyday kid activities—school, sports, and life at home— JayDaMasah is an emerging artist excited to share his passion with the world. “I started music pretty young,” shares the artist. “I was always dancing, doing normal kid things, but my mom saw something no one else did. I started singing out of out of nowhere. I sang with my brother who rapped. Everyone in town knew about us and supported us.”
JayDaMasah’s moniker was inspired by his mother, the singer’s constant supporter. “‘Masah’ came from my mom predicting it would be my stage name. There are a lot of things she predicted that always ends up finding me and being for me. Masah wasn’t on my mind, but it came back to me.”
Despite trying to pursue other hobbies, JayDaMasah kept finding himself back in the grasp of music. “That was it for me,” he adds, happy to surrender to his passion. “I got into music because it came naturally to me,” tells JayDaMasah. “I like making people happy. I want others to feel the way I feel when I make music. I want to create music that puts you at ease when you’re stressed, music that provides reassurance.”
When he began his musical journey, JayDaMasah experimented with a sing-song flow in the vein of hip-hop music. Curiosity guided JayDaMasah to learn about Afrobeat, and the rest fell into place. “When I got older, there was one song by Wizkid [a Nigerian singer and songwriter] that made me challenge myself,” explains JayDaMasah. “I wondered how I would do on a beat like that.”
These days, JayDaMasah is mastering his own sound, a combination of life’s influences and his own take on Afrobeat and hip-hop. He creates music regularly from his home studio and works with producers in Ghana to mix and master the sound.
JayDaMasah’s inspirational single, “Kontrol,” is a nod to his creative process and the obstacles he has overcome to create. “Sometimes I experience a burnout when I’m making music for a long time. I lose my will to write and record—nothing can get me in the spirit. Music is something you can’t force. It has to come to you. You can’t push and grind for it, it’s a creative thing.”
“It’s during that time that I look up to God because, without him, I wouldn’t be here right now. I put the beat on, and the lyrics just came to me after I prayed and prayed. I ended up making the song about God, and it came out perfectly like it was made to happen,” adds JayDaMasah. “My belief is that sometimes you don’t have to fight all your battles alone. Sometimes you can look up to God and let him take control. There are things we can’t control, but he can guide us to where we want to be.”
Following “Kontrol,” JayDaMasah looks forward to sharing another single—a blend of classical flow with groovy undertones. “A lot of my songs are slow, not hype music. They’re something that will calm you down.”
“Kontrol” is available on all streaming platforms, with promotional support from Starlight PR.
