Doja Cat may be preparing to step away from music for a while. After releasing five studio albums and scoring multiple Billboard Hot 100 hits, the artist revealed in a new Elle UK cover story published Wednesday, May 13, that she has been thinking about taking an extended break from the industry.
While discussing her demanding schedule, Doja explained that she intentionally makes time for herself and her personal interests outside of music, including painting. “I demand time from my team,” she said. “They’ve helped me to find pockets between the really busy moments.”
The rapper then shared that she has been considering a much longer pause from recording and touring. “I think I want to take three years off,” she said. “I want to just do whatever.”
Among the things currently keeping her busy outside of music are finishing another mural project and finally decorating the upper floor of her home, which she admitted has remained mostly empty for years.
Doja most recently released her 2025 album Vie, which reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart. She is currently on the road supporting the project through her Tour Ma Vie World Tour, which began in November and is set to continue through early December.
Following a short break from touring, Doja is also preparing to resume performances with an upcoming show in Kigali.
Elsewhere in the interview, Doja reflected on the humor and irony often found in her music. She pointed to artists such as Nicki Minaj, Drake, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, and Lil Wayne as examples of rappers who naturally blend comedy into their lyricism and personalities.
“These people are not comedians, but they are,” she explained. “They could write a stand-up set if they wanted to, but music is much more fun.” She added that she learned the importance of irony in hip-hop from Jay-Z after watching one of his interviews.
Doja also spoke candidly about how her recent diagnosis of borderline personality disorder has impacted her personal relationships. The artist first shared the diagnosis publicly back in March.
Discussing how it affects her emotionally, she admitted that even small situations can trigger anxiety and fear of abandonment. “If I have a boyfriend, and he leaves just to run errands, my brain thinks he’s breaking up with me,” she said, linking those feelings to her father leaving when she was young. She added that she continues working on reminding herself that she is safe and not being abandoned.
