JP explores R&B territory with new EP "Took a Turn"

JP is opening a new chapter with Took a Turn, his latest EP that shifts him from Milwaukee’s lowend rap scene into modern R&B. Featuring singles like “Serenity” and “My Peace,” the project leans on falsetto, harmonies, and slower rhythms, marking a move away from the dance-focused beats that first pushed him into the spotlight.

This new sound comes after a breakthrough year. On November 15, 2024, JP made his national television debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he performed “School Dance.” He followed that milestone with The Groove, a live EP that showcased his vocals over full-band arrangements. A run of open-mic appearances further showed he was ready to be recognized as more than just a product of Milwaukee’s viral scene.

With Took a Turn, those R&B influences step forward in full. The title track gained traction early on TikTok, while his Genius Open Mic performance of “Serenity” highlighted the project’s melodic depth. Even though he comes from Milwaukee’s bass-heavy, clap-driven low-end style, JP has always pushed beyond those limits. National coverage of the city’s rise often cites him as one of the scene’s standout names.

That doesn’t mean he’s leaving rap behind. His viral hit “Bad Bitty” and the remix featuring NLE Choppa cemented his national reach, earning him playlist placements, Genius highlights, and From the Block performances. That success makes his move into R&B feel natural, more like an expansion of his artistry than a reinvention.

Took a Turn shows an artist unwilling to be confined by genre. By combining Milwaukee grit with smooth R&B textures, JP makes it clear he is focused on growth and range. The project positions him as a voice capable of thriving in both the immediacy of rap and the timeless space of R&B.

The track includes Babyface Ray, who delivers a catchy hook and standout verses that immediately grab your attention. Big Sean also makes his presence felt with sharp bars of his own. Together, Sean and Babyface Ray showcase a natural chemistry, tied even closer through their shared Detroit roots. The result is a strong release, and it leaves us looking forward to hearing more from this trio in the future.
