Sean Combs’ mother, Janice Combs, has spoken out against Netflix over claims made in its documentary Sean Combs: The Reckoning.
Janice released a statement to “correct some of the lies” featured in the film, which premiered on 2 December.
The 80-year-old matriarch told Deadline, “These inaccuracies regarding my son Sean’s upbringing and family life is intentionally done to mislead viewers and further harm our reputation.”
Having been present in the Manhattan courtroom for almost every day of her now incarcerated son’s two-month trial this summer on sex trafficking and RICO charges, Janice claims her son’s longtime rival, Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson, produced a program filled with falsehoods.
Calling out the streaming platform for going “salacious to promote the series”, Janice focused on the claim that her son had once taken his anger out on her.
“The allegations stated by Mr Kirk Burrows that my son slapped me while we were conversing after the tragic City College events on 28 December 1991, are inaccurate and patently false,” she said.
She added, “That was a very sad day for all of us,” referring to the New York City tragedy in which an overcrowded event promoted by her son resulted in nine deaths and dozens of injuries.
“For him to use this tragedy and incorporate fake narratives to further his prior failed and current attempt to gain what was never his, Bad Boy Records, is wrong, outrageous and past offensive.”
In a 1 December cease and desist letter from his legal team, Combs called The Reckoning a “hit piece”, alleging that 50 Cent’s involvement amounted to “corporate retaliation.”
