Indiana’s PRODG Keeps Staying True to Himself with New Rap-Rock Single, “Invincible”

Rock rapper PRODG’s new single, “Invincible,” is for anyone who has ever been underestimated. Feeling like the world didn’t believe in him, and tired of the doubters getting under his skin, PRODG had a realization. He didn’t need to let them bother him. He would stay true to himself. He would become invincible.

In a world troubled like this
They mad cause they don’t get it
I became this man, manifesting greatness
Till the end, I’m true to myself
Since the beginning it’s been living here
But now I’m damn near invincible

The first half of the track is firmly in the rap genre, with the influence of early 2000s Eminem shining through clearly. The second half feels more Linkin Park: the drums get louder with a distinct rock feel, and PRODG starts to scream-sing powerfully, letting his pent-up emotions ring out.

“Invincible” was produced by Leland Elliott of Scorched Earth Productions in Nashville. Elliot’s work has graced the recordings of major label artists like Kenny Chesney and Taylor Swift, as well as independent ones like Jelly Roll, Struggle Jennings, and Yelawolf. As expected, the sound on “Invincible” is impeccable, with big bass, catchy keyboard riffs, and crystal clear vocal production.

PRODG (born Dylan McCoy) stands for Professional Rapper, Old Dylan’s Gone. The name signifies the new life that he has taken on, as an artist committed 100% to his craft and his career.

PRODG grew up on a farm in rural Indiana, feeling isolated from the world. He compares that time to being out in the “wilderness,” in a Biblical sense. He says it gave him the drive that he now feels to connect with others through music.

Though he now lives in a less isolated part of Indiana, his country roots run deep. He says, “I’m a country boy as to what it represents: peace and privacy. This world's slowly losing a lot of that. My music sheds light on values people have forgotten about and struggles we deal with as a society.”

A self-taught singer, PRODG began his musical journey in school choirs, eventually becoming the lead in his high school’s plays. Although he feels his singing is his real strength, he wants to rap as well, to get out all of his ideas. He says, “When you have a lot to say, you can use rap as a form to really get it all out.”

His lyrics are about his life. Being raised in the country, having an absent father, his complicated relationship with his mother, wishing to be a good father to his 2-year-old daughter, his ambitions to pursue his musical calling. All of it is reflected in his writing.

The song, “Invincible,” began with a vision he had while deep in prayer. He says, “I had started writing a poem called ‘Words I Should Have Said,’ and I was praying to God, saying, ‘Can you give me something to get over this pain?’ And in my head, I pictured a notebook. I kept writing, and then started rapping the words to a beat.”

His connection with God lets him know he’s on the right path. “I feel like it’s what I’m called to do,” he says. “I don’t have a plan B. I know my potential and my talent.”

Now, it’s just a matter of keeping up with the ideas. He says that he has created more than 2,000 songs, and plans to keep his music coming with consistency. Fans can soon expect an album full of rock songs, currently in the process of being mixed in Texas.

Through it all, PRODG will remain true to himself. In doing so, he can be authentic and connect with like-minded individuals who have felt their own pain, while reaching for their own dreams.

New Single “DON’T GO” Showcases the Real, Raw, And Rare Music of Virginia Singer and Rapper THEDONRRRM

image

For Virginia singer and rapper THEDONRRRM, it’s all about the three Rs: real, raw, and rare.

As his name suggests, the music of THEDONRRRM keeps it real, with lyrics that tell stories from his life. His songs are raw: he doesn’t pull punches or hide from the ugly side of life. And his sound is rare, from the contrast between his singsong melodies and gruff rap vocals, to rhythmic experiments from hip hop/R&B to Brazilian funk.

All these elements can be heard on the new single, “DON’T GO.”

Over the catchy Latin bounce of the Brazilian funk beat, the hook showcases THEDONRRRM’s melodic singing. The lyrics, based on the real pain of a fading relationship, paint a picture of two hearts drifting apart.

She said please don’t go
You can’t leave me laying here alone
Keep telling me that she been hurt before
She feel like I don’t love her no more

The melodies are soft and catchy, and seem to fit the youthful image of THEDONRRRM. But soon, his alter ego appears, represented by deep baritone rap lyrics explaining that he can’t be home because he’s “chasing the cheese.”

I know it hurt when I’m out on the road
I’m missing your love but I’m stuck in that mode
She running to me when I walk in the door

“DON’T GO” is the sixth track off of the album, Call Me After You Hear This. While THEDONRRRM has been releasing music since 2016, this record marks his first full-length release. It may have been a long time coming, but something real is worth the wait.

Born and raised in Richmond, VA as Donovan Bennett, THEDONRRRM was introduced to music by his father, a DJ who helped him build his first home studio in middle school. By high school, he was recording, mixing, and mastering records for himself and others.

Building on that experience, THEDONRRRM is now a sought-after mixing and mastering engineer. With credits including the 4x platinum single “Party Girl” by StaySolidRocky, THEDONRRRM runs his music production business out of his personal studio, 3R’s Studios in Richmond.

But despite his talent at making other artists sound good, his current focus is primarily on his own career as a genre-bending artist. With upcoming appearances on the east coast (including New York City) and music videos in the works, the message is clear: THEDONRRRM is busy making honest, well-produced, and unique music that is well-worth repeated listening. Real. Raw. And rare.
