Akriila, the latest artist featured on The Cover, has created an exclusive playlist offering another preview of her forthcoming album, ‘Lucy Miró Al Mundo Y Notó Que Está Girando, Es Mi Segundo Disco’.
In her Cover profile, written by Charis McGowan with photographs from Lo Harley, the Chilean singer and rapper discusses her second album. Its English title translates to ‘Lucy Looked At The World, And Noticed That It’s Spinning’.
The accompanying playlist is called ‘Lucy Is The New Hopecore’. It combines songs from present day artists including Bassvictim, Corridos Ketamina, previous Cover artist Chanel Beads and Akriila collaborator Jane Remover through her Venturing project. Earlier influences such as PJ Harvey and The Beatles also appear.
Listen to the playlist through Apple Music here or use the Spotify player below.
Akriila has introduced the record through three tracks so far: ‘Partedemipartedeti’, ‘Roger’ and ‘Suave’ featuring Jane Remover. While describing the project’s main idea to NME, she cited Ukrainian artist shelestvetrovki’s series ‘She Is So Hot I Wanna Clean Her Room’: “Everything is completely messy; you’re looking only at your own problems, extremely self-centred. Then there comes a turning point: a real ray of light has to come in through the window for you to understand there is more out there. That the world is turning and I’m growing.”
The interview also explores the experiences that shaped Akriila while she was growing up in Santiago, including teaching herself guitar and becoming involved in the city’s active trap community. Reflecting on the effects of the Covid lockdown and protests in Santiago, she said: “I was part of a generation that didn’t know what to do, whether to go to university. I was lost. In the pandemic, I pushed myself to understand what I wanted, and music was very present. Then I started to release it, without thinking about anything specific.” Discussing her interest in Auto-Tune, she continued: “It’s a filter, an effect, but it filters something real. I can become a character that’s more playful, for example. My recordings are based on sensation.”
Each year, NME publishes 50 Cover stories highlighting the next generation of music through detailed profiles and original photography. Explore the coffee table collection NME The Cover 2024-2025, featuring artists such as Kneecap, Lola Young, Amaarae, LE SSERAFIM, Oklou and many others.
