Lip Critic have released their intense new single Jackpot, which will appear on their upcoming album Theft World.
The new track arrives after their earlier release Legs In A Snare. The song hits with a barrage of sounds inspired by casino environments, including slot machines and arcade style effects, while vocalist Bret Kaser delivers the track’s loud and unruly vocals.
According to press materials, the song centres on a character shaped by gambling culture from a young age, who later finds himself struggling internally as an adult. You can listen to the track below.
“‘Jackpot’ is a song about risking it all, and winning it all, betting the house, and ending up with two houses, then waking up with nothing at all,” the band said.
The song will appear on the band’s forthcoming record Theft World, which is scheduled for release on May 1 through Partisan Records.
“’Theft World’ is an ode to the power and pervasiveness of stealing,” the band previously said of the album. “It’s about taking something ugly and using it to make something cute. It’s about eating an absurd world and falling in love with it as you digest.”
The idea behind the album developed while the band were touring in support of their debut record Hex Dealer, which came out in 2024. During that time, Kaser learned that someone had stolen his personal information and used it to make hundreds of purchases, including buying the band’s full catalogue on Bandcamp.
They later identified the person responsible, who turned out to be a young supporter of the band. He explained that he believed their music contained secret clues that formed a kind of treasure hunt that he thought he had solved. Instead of taking legal action, the band chose to record him explaining the detailed fictional story he had created.
Before the album arrives, Lip Critic will also host a series of shows in New York under the name Theft Saga.
The opening performance is set for March 21 at the Yong Xin Tan Laundromat in Brooklyn. The second date will take place March 26 at Spring Bar’s Basement, followed by a final show at the Frost St Boxing Ring on April 9. More details are available here.
When Hex Dealer was released two years ago, NME awarded it a five star review and praised the record as “bold, energetic and blisteringly smart”. The publication wrote: “Throughout ‘Hex Dealer’, Lip Critic prove why they are the band of the moment. A full-on, disruptive force emerging from their city’s underground scene – their music rides high on a bolt of infectious energy.”
